BELFAST – Allen G. Vickers, 88, formerly of Islesboro, died Dec. 9, 2009, with his beloved wife of 65 years, Sarah (Tyler), at his side. Allen was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Buffalo, N.Y. He spent his youth in New York and New Jersey, and spent many happy summer days in Ridgeway, Ontario, at the home of his maternal grandparents, Asa Joseph and Clara Moore Hanna.
He loved to travel the NY Thruway. He graduated from Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vt., in 1943. It was at Middlebury that he met his future wife, Sarah Clark Tyler. They married June 24, 1944. “Vic” was an educator for more than 40 years, beginning as mathematics instructor at Tabor Academy, Marion, Mass. He served as headmaster at three schools: St. Dunstans School, Providence, R.I.; The Hinckley School, Hinckley; and Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest, Ill. He returned to the classroom at Iolini School, Honolulu, and retired to Islesboro in 1987.
After his retirement they settled in their home on Turtlehead, Islesboro, where he was forever tinkering in the barn and in the garden. He served as an assessor on Islesboro for several years. Vic loved sailing with his Buccaneer pals aboard the Tabor Boy and family reunions on Islesboro, especially when a clambake was on the menu.
He was the loving father of Christina Tyler and husband, John Maluta, of Mokena, Ill., Virginia Clark and husband, Edward Boscacci, of Fremont, Calif., and Tyler William and wife, Ellen Vickers, of Coopers Mills; proud “Papa” of Sarah Hannah Vickers, John Allen Michael Maluta, Zachary Tyler Vickers and Edward William Boscacci III; and dear son of the late Walter Kane and Clara Grace Vickers. Interment at Maple Grove Cemetery, Islesboro, will be private.
